Spay and Neuter in Miller Place, NY
As an AAHA accredited hospital, we abide by only the highest standards of care and treatment for pets in Miller Place and surrounding areas. Though pet spay and neuter surgery has become standard for many owners, we take the comfort and care of each patient seriously during any procedure at Miller Place Animal Hospital. We encourage our clients to bring a new puppy or kitten in right away for a wellness exam, so we can discuss their health and veterinary care, including the best time to have them spayed or neutered. As with any surgery, we’ll send your pet home in your loving arms with detailed after-care instructions and proper medications. Call (631) 744-2050 to learn more.
When to Have Your Pet Spayed or Neutered
The time to have your specific breed and type of pet can vary greatly, so we encourage you to discuss this important surgery with one of our knowledgeable doctors. As an informed pet owner, some points to keep in mind include:
- Most dogs can be spayed or neutered around 6-9 months old, but larger breeds may benefit from waiting until after they’re fully mature.
- Cats may receive added benefits, like decreased chances of urine spraying and contracting infectious diseases, if they undergo spay or neuter surgery before they’re fully mature.
- To eliminate any chances of pregnancy, cats should be spayed before 6 months old.
Caring for Your Pet After Their Spay/Neuter
Our care does not stop once spay or neuter surgery is complete. We work to inform our clients on how to care for their pets afterwards. If your pet is acting unusually lethargic, experiences a loss of appetite, is vomiting, or has diarrhea, please contact us right away. Your pet will need some extra TLC and some time to recover. Things to keep in mind as you care for your pet after surgery:
- Give them a quiet place to recover for at least 24 hours.
- Your pet may need an E-collar if they try to lick or chew on their incision.
- Check their incision daily and watch for unusual redness or discharge.
- Don’t give your pet a bath for 14 days or until sutures are removed.
Please contact us with any questions about spay or neuter surgery. Better yet, schedule a wellness visit, so we can advise you on the best time for spay or neuter surgery for your pet. We look forward to talking soon!
