Cat and Dog Exams and Wellness in Miller Place, NY
Dogs and cats are like people in many ways, including their health needs, so it’s important to meet those needs so your pet can be with you for as long as possible. At Miller Place Animal Hospital, we believe that preventive care is the best way to accomplish this goal while promoting a good quality of life for your pet. There are many health conditions that pets are prone to, including dental disease, parasites, and obesity, but with routine wellness exams, we can prevent these and other conditions.
Whether your pet is 6 weeks or 6 years old, it’s important that they see a veterinarian at least once a year for a wellness exam and laboratory work. For our older pets, we typically recommend examinations twice a year to accommodate the new health risks that come with age. These exams allow us to ensure that your pet is healthy and to detect any problems early. The sooner we can detect any signs of illness, the sooner we can treat them, and the greater the chances of a better quality of life.
Each wellness exam consists of a comprehensive "nose-to-tail" body assessment. Laboratory testing of blood, urine and feces allows us to identify conditions that can be hidden from our eyes, such as parasites, diabetes, kidney disease, Lyme, or heartworm disease. Pet Vaccinations
Vaccinations are another critical part of the routine wellness exam, as they help protect pets against many potentially life-threatening conditions. As a minimum requirement and for pets with an unknown vaccination history, we typically recommend the following core vaccines:
Canine Core Vaccines
- Canine parvovirus (CPV)
- Canine distemper virus (CDV)
- Canine adenovirus (CAV)
- Lyme
- Rabies*
Feline Core Vaccines
* Rabies is required for all outdoor AND indoor dogs, cats, and ferrets.
Of course, specific vaccines and schedules vary from pet to pet, species to species, and are dependent on age, lifestyle, and geographic distribution. We do not believe in one vaccination protocol fits all. Our team members will discuss any or all vaccinations with you and customize a vaccination protocol to fit your pets needs.
